While great leadership is essential to a successful business, most great bosses understand that it is their employees who are the true strength of a company. Smart bosses do their best to ensure that they are providing the necessary leadership for the team to be the ultimate engine of achievement, not themselves. And although there are as many effective management styles as there are effective managers, there are certain strategies that have proven to be very successful for getting the most out of a work force.
Be open to ideas from your employees
Only foolish managers think they know everything. Sure, you have had a great deal of success by doing things your way, but realize that there may be better alternatives. Be sure that the lines of communication are open and that anyone who has an idea is encouraged to bring it to your attention.
Give your employees a reason to care
Incentive programs work. Help your employees become investors in their own success by rewarding them for their good efforts. And these incentives don’t have to be expensive or time- consuming. Just simply letting your workers know that you notice and appreciate the extra effort they are putting forth will bring great results.
John Saaty, CEO of Decision Lens, makes this great suggestion about creating a dynamic office space: “Treat every employee as a colleague, and turn the management structure upside-down. If you are hiring well, then the management of the company is there to support the talent and aspirations of your employees, and not the reverse.”
Focus on results, not methods
The old expression “there are a 1,001 ways to skin a cat” still holds true today. Employees who have demonstrated the ability to deliver results should have the freedom and authority to streamline methods, especially when new technology might allow for greater opportunities. Trust in the capabilities of your staff and you will be rewarded with employees who are constantly trying to improve the efficiency of their tasks.
Provide Strategic leadership
The ability to delegate is one of the most important traits any boss must possess. A micro- manager will only slow down the process, create conflict, and generally do more harm than good. A boss should focus on the strategic or long-term goals of a company or project, and let employees concentrate on executing his or her vision.
The benefits of great leadership are many. Yet leadership is a constant balancing act between delegating and action, between new ideas and proven strategies, and between the carrot and the stick. In the end, the best way to ensure your success as a boss is to give your employees the greatest chance of success as individuals.
