How to Be Accountable to Your Team

The most powerful thing that leaders can do to inspire employees to be accountable is to be visibly accountable themselves.

How to Get Others to Follow

1. ThinkstockPhotos-459956463Use good judgment in what you say and do. As a leader, there is no break; your words and actions set the stage for what others will do. People want to believe in their leaders.

2. Believe in what you do. If you don’t believe in your goals, then convincing others that they should work toward them will be very hard.

3. Treat everyone with respect. Treat others fairly and justly and you can expect that they will treat you the same. A good leader is honest and respectful.

4. Create opportunity and be proactive. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Being proactive allows you to be ready for difficult situations and take advantage of positive circumstances.

6. Stay firm in your decisions. If you aren’t committed to your decisions, you can’t expect others to be committed either. That said, when a decision must be changed (for reasons such as safety or financial viability), provide a thorough explanation.

 

7. Support your team. If a team member makes a mistake, take the blame for the mistake. Figure out why the mistake was made and how it could be prevented in the future.
